the weather outside is frightful, but you look delightful

Temperatures have dropped, snow is on the ground and winter break is almost here. Whether you are enjoying a snow day or just a casual day at home, these are my favorite pieces for looking chic and staying warm.

North Face Sharlet Wrap $65
A hooded sweatshirt is one of the most comfortable pieces of casual wear, but it is definitely not the most attractive. I like these alternative sweatshirts that are made out of an easy-to-wear terry cloth but have design details that flatter your body. An asymmetrical zipper adds a stylish element without making you feel all dressed up.

A great look doesn't have to be formal, just choose structured pieces and add a fun scarf for visual interest. The holiday season is one of constant photo taking, so you don't want to log onto Facebook after a long day of socializing just to be subjected to a photo album documenting your worst dressed day.
Another thing to keep in mind is that around the holidays, friends and neighbors often stop by with freshly baked cookies or a small gift. While those unexpected guests will understand if your living room is covered in wrapping paper, even the nicest person may look askance if you are still in your pajamas or sweatpants in the afternoon. The solution? Throw on a comfortable knit dress over warm leggings and you'll look like you have the holidays under control!

Banana Republic Metallic Stripe Tee $39.50
If you are more of a jeans and t-shirt kind of person, look for a top that feels festive. I am definitely not encouraging anyone to invest in clothing with jingle bells or flashing lights sewn on, but a metallic stripe or subdued sequins on a tee can make even your casual outfit feel special. Throw on your favorite patterned scarf (the easiest and most practical winter accessory) and you're set to leave the house!

If you do have to leave the house on a day when the weather is truly dreadful, looking stylish is probably the last thing on your mind. This is when a cozy, tie-front cardigan will be your best friend. You will feel like you are wrapped up in your favorite blanket on the couch, but the outside world will see a chic layering piece with a waist-defining tie.

It may be tempting to let your winter coat hide a sloppy outfit when you run out to do last minute errands in the snow and slush, but it only takes a minute longer to put together a look that you won't be afraid to show off when you take off your outer layers.

Love those comfy looks! I'm definitely going to get that North Face sweater once it's back in stock and just ordered the Lands' End dress!
