What easier way to bring a breath of fresh air to your outfits than with an easy, breezy scarf? The key here is to pick up a lightweight cotton scarf, although it can be very tempting to get a winter scarf on super sale. The purpose of a scarf in summer is mostly decorative so choose a print you love that won't make you sweat! The options for wearing a scarf are limitless, but an easy way to start incorporating them is to wear them in place of your necklaces.
2. Bright & Breezy Dress
Spring dresses are the most versatile pieces of the season. Pair them with casual sandals and a cardigan to run errands or for a lunch date and in the evening, slip into a sparkly shoe and add a statement bangle bracelet.
When you are traveling this season, your suitcase should never be without a bright and breezy dress because this piece will be the answer to most of your unexpected events. If you are traveling for business, a blazer and scarf thrown over a dress will keep you looking fresh and appropriate for the more social aspects of your trip.
This season is so filled with color and pattern that even your go-to Little Black Dress may not be up to the task of creating a stand-out look. Choose something bright or with a pattern to it, but stay with simple silhouettes so you have the options to layer and accessorize. This is a trend that you should have lots of fun shopping for and even more fun wearing!
Pair back to long sleeve tees, cardigans and cotton sweaters. Add a coordinating patterned scarf to embrace the season's colors. For work, tuck in an oxford, belt with mid-width black or nude and finish with a blazer (sleeves cuffed, of course!) and a pointy-toed slingback flat. A brightly colored bottom makes any outfit warm weather appropriate.
4. Sleeveless Shell
This is essential for your wardrobe transition. A sleeveless shell can be worn under blazers and cardigans while there is still a chill in the air (or when the air conditioning is on too high) and then worn on their own on warmer days. Pair back to suiting separates for work and with jeans for an easy, polished weekend look.
I absolutely love patterned blazers, no matter what the season is, but spring is the season that they are most readily available in stores. While they are not appropriate for a conservative workplace, they can be paired back to skirts for a more casual or creative office. The pictures below show easy weekend outfits, paired back to basic tees and denim. For an evening out, pair over a solid colored dress and layer on the jewelry.
6. Short Sleeve Tees
It is time to swap out the long sleeves and invest in short sleeve knits. As we move towards the warmer months, easy wash and wear pieces are key. Although these may not be as lightweight as your summer silks and linens, they travel well and do not require a trip to the dry cleaners. Plus, most knits have a lower price tag than their dressier counterparts so you will always have something to wear.
7. Floral Skirt
This is the pattern for spring. A bright print can be easier to wear in a skirt than in a dress. Pair with something solid and neutral on the top to temper the pattern and prevent it from overwhelming your frame.
A floral skirt is the perfect answer for the ever frustrating "dressy casual" dress code. For bridal showers, garden parties and dinners on the patio, wear with a coordinating cardigan. Finish with a pointy-toed flat in a bright color and a sparkly bracelet.
For a more casual day, tuck in a solid tee and slip in your favorite sandals.
8. Trench Coat
The best trenches should be able to seamlessly transition between day and night. I love traditional styling in a bold color. If you prefer something a bit more neutral, look for for contrast detailing. The navy and white Banana Republic trench makes a big statement and will look sharp for many seasons. If you do go for a bold color, either choose a solid or a very subtle pattern.
A well-constructed trench should last you several years so make sure you choose a color you love and a fit that is flattering.
9. Colorful Belt
I mention colorful belts in almost every post I make, so sufficed to say, I think this is one of the best pieces to have in your wardrobe. Add them to every outfit you love!
Skip the brown and black shoes. Spring is all about color so pick up a bright pop (or two!) to look fresh from head to toe!
