Don't worry about your bag color matching every outfit. Think of it like an outerwear piece; it doesn't have to coordinate perfectly, but it shouldn't be a harsh contrast.
In the comments a couple days ago I had a question about choosing a brightly colored bag. They are very much in style right now, but with so many choices (and price ranges) it can be rather overwhelming. Unless you are willing to sink serious money into a well-made leather purse, keep your bright pops of color confined to smaller clutches and totes. Then there is no harm if you are done with the trend next season!

J. Crew/The Cambridge Satchel Company Fluorescent Satchel $170

Upgrade your errands with a brightly colored tote bag. With enough room for your wallet, keys, library books and a few groceries, you'll never want to go back to your small purse again!

cold weather chic

Gap Cable Twist Cowlneck Scarf $29.99

It is starting to get cold and snowy here in the Midwest which means that it is the time that most people give up looking stylish in favor of being warm. However, cold weather accessories have come a long way in terms of looking good so this season you can finally have it all. Since not all of my readers will be snowed in this weekend, there are also a few mild winter accessories which are marked with an asterisk.
When looking for a great winter wear piece, stick to classic designs with simple lines and beautiful detailing. Since these thicker pieces are more expensive it is important to pick items that will last you for several seasons without looking outdated.

Scarves and gloves are great ways to show some personality so try to find a pair in your favorite color or pattern. The goal is to be excited about your cold weather look.

Look for pieces that are versatile, but that doesn't mean that you can only wear neutrals. Your outerwear look doesn't have to match your outfit.

Even the coldest part of the country gets some mild winter days which means you can look fabulous with fewer layers. Depending on your local climate, the pieces in this row can be worn from fall through spring. Although not warm enough for a snowstorm, these are great options for layering up on date night or on the way to a party.

For those of us who will be spending the next couple months hunkered into down puffy coats, remember that a bright accessory can make the defining difference in your outfit and even in your day. Find pieces you love and it will be easy to be both stylish and warm this winter season!

The center outfit is a work-appropriate look that is great for a day when versatility is key. You can easily transition from your desk to a lunch with clients to drinks with your coworkers. This is the only outfit that has a bright pop of color and because of the high contrast, I did not add in any other prints or patterns.

Like this look? Get the cardigan:

Ann Taylor Draped Open Front Cardigan $59.99

Banana Republic Cashmere Open Cardigan $225
This is the final installment of the Thanksgiving style session I did with my mom. I left this piece for last because the outfits I created with it were some of my mom's favorites from the collection and that is what this is really all about--loving what you wear everyday. She bought this long, open cardi and, although she absolutely loves it, she was still struggling to get use out of it. Nearly every piece in this post is an item that had been relegated to the back of her closet, so I'm happy to find use for all of these hidden gems!

The dress was an easy choice to layer with this cardigan because of the similar color palette, but the sleeve length was what really sold me on the outfit. The pattern peeks out at the wrists which is my favorite place to have a pop. A cardigan this long can easily overwhelm both an outfit and a figure, so I belted it in every iteration. Always make sure that your clothes are working for you and not the other way around. A couple great belts can keep any wayward item in line!

The above outfit could work just as well with a pair of denim or colored cords for a comfy, but chic weekend look. Looking fabulous doesn't have to be difficult--this is just as easy as throwing on yoga pants and a sweatshirt! Invest in a fun flat, a great riding boot or even a fashionable sneaker to finish off the ensemble.

Paired with the winter white trousers, you can wear this to dinner, to an afternoon wedding or as the best dressed parent at the school winter concert this year!
