I hope that everyone has a fun Halloween, whether that includes trick-or-treating, scary movies, costume parties or all of the above! We may not be able to compete with the adorable costumes that kids are wearing, but at we can still enjoy the candy!

warm & cozy

This past week the change of weather has really hit me and with the temperatures dipping into the thirties, it is time to start getting the winter clothes out of storage. After a long, hot summer I am excited to wear my warm clothes but am not ready to cover them up with a coat every time I walk outside. After all, there's all of winter ahead to have my coat be my main statement piece. In these fall months I am much more likely to layer long sleeve tees with cozy sweaters and top it off with a down vest and scarf.

What I love about wearing a down vest as my outerwear is that it allows a glimpse of the layer underneath. This makes it fun to add pops of color and pattern. The easiest way is with a striped sweater, but any pattern that extends onto the sleeve will work.

For more mild days, try a chunky three quarter sleeve sweater over a long sleeve tee. Playing with sleeve lengths allows your layers to pull their weight in your outfit. If your long sleeve tee can help add dimension to your look then that is one less accessory that you have to worry about. Plus, I find nothing more frustrating than wearing several layers and realizing at the end of the day that no one saw anything except for the outer most one! You shouldn't be the only one who knows how cute your ensemble is!

scarves and hats and gloves, oh my!

Gap Multi-Color Infinity Cowl Scarf $34.95
Temperatures have dipped into the 30s here in Chicago so it is time to start adding hats and gloves to my outerwear ensemble! I like to mix my accessories rather than choose a matching set which allows me more flexibility to add in pops of bright colors. Even if you prefer neutral colors, choosing pieces with slight variations to the color and texture will add subtle but effective visual interest.

LL Bean Basketweave Hat & Mitten Set $49.95
I love to start with a multicolored scarf, then pick up one of the color pops in a solid colored glove and finish with a neutral hat. Be bold with your color choices since they only have to coordinate with your coat.
Once winter truly arrives I am more likely to choose my accessories solely based on warmth, but these crisp fall days are all about style and pattern. Herringbone and stripes are always on trend, but your first priority should be finding a design that you love.

Fall and winter are great for rich hues, such as eggplant, cobalt, emerald or burgundy and warm neutrals like winter white, taupe, grey or chocolate brown. Choose your favorite two or three colors to create your own unique color combination for these upcoming cold months.

The weather on October 31st is unpredictable which is why I am ending this Halloween costume series with my outfit ideas for rainy or cold nights. Whether or not you have a costume picked out already, keep these in the back of your mind so that no inclement weather can dampen your Halloween spirit.
