getting to know you & comment contest

3/31/2013

Tomorrow marks the six month anniversary of this blog! Thank you all so much for reading and sticking with me during my sporadic postings. My commitment this month is to write two posts per week (no long hiatuses in April!), but I need your help. Although I can see how many of you read my blog on any given day, I don't know that much about you individually. So that I can better choose topics, I am asking that everyone answer three quick questions about you and your style in the comments.

To sweeten the deal, I am also running a comment contest this month. For any April post that reaches 15 comments (excluding any comments I may write), I will randomly choose a commenter who will win a practically stylish gift. Comments will be open for one week after each post and if there is the requisite number of comments at that time, I'll announce a winner.

If every reader answers today's questions, we will easily have our first winner this week! This blog is all about you so I need your feedback to keep it going strong. And now, without further ado:
The Practically Stylish Questionnaire
1. What is the dress code for your workplace? Are you allowed to wear denim? If you don't work, what types of outfits do you need for your day-to-day life?

2. If you are running late in the morning, what is your go-to outfit? Why do you choose it? What don't you like about it?

3. What would you like to see me write more about? Are there any style challenges you would like me to address?

Thanks for your comments and for continuing to read my thoughts here!

chic shorts

Spring is beginning to feel like a possibility here in the Midwest as well (50 degrees today!) and although shorts weather is still a ways off for me, it is always fun to start planning ahead. The outfits that I have curated show a range of layering options that should keep your shorts looking spiffy and polished from the cooler spring days to the heat of summer. Also, since many buildings run their air conditioning at levels that resemble Chicago winters, it is usually handy to have an extra layer in your bag.

You'll notice that none of my outfits include a polo shirt; this is mostly because the only polo I own has a giant "Legoland" logo embroidered on it. I don't buy polo shirts because there are many other options that are just as easy to wash and wear and that I find more flattering on my frame. The neckline on most polos is high and has the extra bulk of the collar (which I can never manage to keep looking crisp) which limits your ability to layer with necklaces and scarves.
Picture
I absolutely love half-sleeve, ballet neck tops. The neckline is open without being low, the shoulders are substantial enough to cover your bra straps, and the sleeve length feels dressier than a typical cap sleeve tee. Plus they are a knit which means they can be thrown into the washer and dryer without any special consideration.

An easy way add polish to a shorts look is with a belt. I tucked in my ballet neck tee in green gingham shorts and tied it together with a belt that match the tee. The denim blazer is a very dark indigo in a thin fabric. Stay away from bulky, light-colored denim jackets since they will add weight and look outdated. The necklace is more glitzy than most people will wear casually, but even a simple chain will help add some extra interest to the outfit.
Picture
Since there is both a bold color and a bold pattern in this outfit, it was important that everything felt related. Choose either all warm colors, all cool colors or, like I did here, colors that mix together to create the third (yellow + blue = green).
Looking for ballet neck tees? Here are a few to get you started:
Ann Taylor (stripes) / (solids)
Banana Republic (stripes) / (solids)
J. Crew (stripes) / (solids)
LOFT (stripes)
Want a pair of patterned shorts that aren't super short-shorts? I love these:
Lands' End (paisley) / (stripe)
Lands' End (walking length)
LOFT (straight fit) / (curvy fit)
LOFT (floral)
Modern denim jackets? Don't worry- I've got you covered:
GAP (chambray)
Nordstrom (dark denim)
ModCloth (dark denim)
Picture
For a business inspired summer look, layer a collar-less button down shirt with a cardigan. Losing the the collar keeps the outfit relaxed, modern and allows for accessorizing, if one so desires. I chose a neutral cardigan and belt to continue the business-casual formality, even though most offices frown on shorts. Pair with a patent, slingback flat and a gold bracelet. This is a great outfit to wear for for lunch dates on the patio, to meetings of your volunteer or hobby groups, or for an evening stroll around the city.

A collarless shirt is an easy way to add polish to any outfit. Here are a few to add a crisp edge to all your favorite summer shorts:
Ann Taylor (solid) / (patterned)
Banana Republic (solids) / (patterned)
GAP (solid)
J. Crew (solids)
LOFT (floral) / (solids)
The best outfits should maintain their integrity even when they are deconstructed. Everyday life requires transitions so when you are getting dressed you should think about how each layer works on its own and as part of the whole outfit.
Picture
This base of this casual outfit is a pair of army green walking shorts (rolled twice at the cuff) and a simple summer-weight sweater. This is no heavier than a polo shirt, but adds variety to closet rotation. The most basic layer can be accessorized with a belt, a pendant necklace and your favorite sandals. A light scarf and/or a 3/4 length sleeve blazer add extra coverage for cool nights.

The great thing about summer layers is that you can actually show them off. In winter, most of your layers remain covered because you need them for warmth. In spring and summer you travel between the heat of outdoors to the chill of indoors a/c so your layers are much more likely to be taken on and off.

I prefer to layer short sleeve and 3/4 length sleeve tops instead of long sleeve ones. The outfit shown to the left consists of a half-sleeve ballet neck top, a half-sleeve summer weight cardigan and a 3/4 length sleeve blazer.

Wear a layered outfit like this for a weekend of running errands or any time when you will be back and forth between heat and a/c.
Not all belts need to be worn through your belt loops. If you don't want to do any other accessorizing, a belt can make the difference between a boring outfit and a stylish one. I chose a dark grey patent belt to offset the lace tiered top, however, one with less contrast (such as a metallic) would be an equally appropriate choice.

Belts worn around the waist work best when they are following a detail of the top, perhaps a horizontal stripe or tier. Here are a few tops that can be easily belted:
J. Crew (patterned)
LOFT (stripes)
LOFT (lace)
WHBM (ruffles)

The necklace style you choose can make a big impact on your outfit. The short, glitzy necklace on the far left dresses up an otherwise casual outfit. Paired with a metallic sandal, this can be worn for a sunset drink at your local wine bar The longer necklace can be worn in day to day life, from dog walking to grocery shopping.

Somewhere along the way accessorizing got a bad rap. Never feel like you need to apologize for looking nice. Accessories are not just the purview of fashionistas; they should be embraced by even the most practical dressers.
Don't be afraid of bold patterns, especially in spring and summer. A print on a short is much easier to wear than a print on a full length pant. Choose patterns that are classic, such as gingham and seersucker, that you will get use out of for several years or ones that you feel especially drawn to and will be excited to wear. If you prefer to keep solids on your bottom half, invest in patterned tops. Even a small amount of pattern will help you avoid the pitfall of boring blocks of color.

As you switch your closet around for the new season, keep your accessories and jewelry front and center so that it is easy for you to see what options you have when you are getting dressed. Don't leave the house without at least one accessory; you may feel strange and overdressed at first, but after you start getting compliments from your friends and coworkers, you'll soon get used to the extra pieces.

ten must-haves for spring

3/26/2013

Spring is all about transitional pieces. Many of your winter favorites can still be worn and with a few layers, the summer ones can be pulled out of storage. Although the stores are full of eye-catching, new items that beg to be brought home to your closet, there are only a few pieces you really need to bridge the gap between your long-sleeved winter wardrobe and your short and sunny summer one. These ten must-haves not only provide a refresh for spring, but can also be mixed and matched this summer and fall.
1. Cotton Patterned Scarf
What easier way to bring a breath of fresh air to your outfits than with an easy, breezy scarf? The key here is to pick up a lightweight cotton scarf, although it can be very tempting to get a winter scarf on super sale. The purpose of a scarf in summer is mostly decorative so choose a print you love that won't make you sweat! The options for wearing a scarf are limitless, but an easy way to start incorporating them is to wear them in place of your necklaces.

Lands' End Voile Oblong Dot Scarf in Orange Sparks $24

Banana Republic Monica Tropical Scarf in Green Print $49.50
2. Bright & Breezy Dress
Spring dresses are the most versatile pieces of the season. Pair them with casual sandals and a cardigan to run errands or for a lunch date and in the evening, slip into a sparkly shoe and add a statement bangle bracelet.

When you are traveling this season, your suitcase should never be without a bright and breezy dress because this piece will be the answer to most of your unexpected events. If you are traveling for business, a blazer and scarf thrown over a dress will keep you looking fresh and appropriate for the more social aspects of your trip.

This season is so filled with color and pattern that even your go-to Little Black Dress may not be up to the task of creating a stand-out look. Choose something bright or with a pattern to it, but stay with simple silhouettes so you have the options to layer and accessorize. This is a trend that you should have lots of fun shopping for and even more fun wearing!

3. Colored Crop or Walking Short
Pair back to long sleeve tees, cardigans and cotton sweaters. Add a coordinating patterned scarf to embrace the season's colors. For work, tuck in an oxford, belt with mid-width black or nude and finish with a blazer (sleeves cuffed, of course!) and a pointy-toed slingback flat. A brightly colored bottom makes any outfit warm weather appropriate.

4. Sleeveless Shell
This is essential for your wardrobe transition. A sleeveless shell can be worn under blazers and cardigans while there is still a chill in the air (or when the air conditioning is on too high) and then worn on their own on warmer days. Pair back to suiting separates for work and with jeans for an easy, polished weekend look.

5. Patterned Blazer
I absolutely love patterned blazers, no matter what the season is, but spring is the season that they are most readily available in stores. While they are not appropriate for a conservative workplace, they can be paired back to skirts for a more casual or creative office. The pictures below show easy weekend outfits, paired back to basic tees and denim. For an evening out, pair over a solid colored dress and layer on the jewelry.

6. Short Sleeve Tees
It is time to swap out the long sleeves and invest in short sleeve knits. As we move towards the warmer months, easy wash and wear pieces are key. Although these may not be as lightweight as your summer silks and linens, they travel well and do not require a trip to the dry cleaners. Plus, most knits have a lower price tag than their dressier counterparts so you will always have something to wear.

7. Floral Skirt
This is the pattern for spring. A bright print  can be easier to wear in a skirt than in a dress. Pair with something solid and neutral on the top to temper the pattern and prevent it from overwhelming your frame.

A floral skirt is the perfect answer for the ever frustrating "dressy casual" dress code. For bridal showers, garden parties and dinners on the patio, wear with a coordinating cardigan. Finish with a pointy-toed flat in a bright color and a sparkly bracelet.

For a more casual day, tuck in a solid tee and slip in your favorite sandals.

LOFT Floral Variety Pencil Skirt $59.99

Banana Republic Daisy Lace Pencil Skirt in Fall Navy $89.50

Banana Republic Piped Navy Trench in Fall Navy $119.99
8. Trench Coat
The best trenches should be able to seamlessly transition between day and night. I love traditional styling in a bold color. If you prefer something a bit more neutral, look for for contrast detailing. The navy and white Banana Republic trench makes a big statement and will look sharp for many seasons. If you do go for a bold color, either choose a solid or a very subtle pattern.

A well-constructed trench should last you several years so make sure you choose a color you love and a fit that is flattering.
Picture
L.L. Bean Commuter Trench Coat in Coral Rose $129
9. Colorful Belt
I mention colorful belts in almost every post I make, so sufficed to say, I think this is one of the best pieces to have in your wardrobe. Add them to every outfit you love!

Lands' End Skinny Perforated Leather Belt in Soft Emerald $28
Picture
Ann Taylor Wild Blooms Patent Skinny Belt in Lush Hibiscus $29.99

10. Bright Ballet Flats
Skip the brown and black shoes. Spring is all about color so pick up a bright pop (or two!) to look fresh from head to toe!

Carlie Pointed Toe Flat in Fresh Coral $110
Picture
Cole Haan Astoria Open Toe Ballet in Sunlight $198

Spring Refresh Tip: Switch out the black in your outfits for navy or light grey to create a softer, neutral palette.

all dressed up (in flats)

Night on the Town
A little while back I received a question from Jill about what to wear when you are getting dressed up, but don't want to (or can't) wear heels. I have created four looks that will look fab with a cute pair of pointy-toed flats or, in the case of the first two looks, with black riding boots and tights. The key component of all of these outfits is the length of the skirt. Without the extra height of heels, it is important to keep your skirts above the knee in order to create a nice, long silhouette.
The hemline should ideally hit between the top of the kneecap and one inch above the knee. As tempting as it is to go longer, it will make your legs look shorter.
Picture
When wearing flats, balancing proportions should be your main focus. Aim for long legs and a small, high waist.
Picture
Desk to Dinner
The goal should be to draw the eye up towards the face so look for open necklines to pair with statement necklaces. With the higher neckline in the Desk to Dinner look, I chose a bright scarf, worn high and compact, to be the focal point of the outfit.

When wearing flats, you can't rely on the shoes to make the outfit, so it is a great time to indulge in accessorizing. Add color or shine with belts, jewelry and scarves.

If you are wearing a scarf or pashmina for coverage, consider clipping it with a brooch at the waist. Be creative with your detailing and most of all, have fun. Dressing up is more fun with sparkle and color.

Summer Wedding
After you've gotten all dressed up, the worst thing you can do is throw on your everyday flats. Invest in a pair of evening flats that will match the formality of your outfits and that will remain in good condition. Here are a few styles I love:

Metallic
Color Pop
Basic Black
Open Toe
Patent
Extra Sparkle
Pointed Toe

practical style on a budget

Trying out a trend or making a big change in your style can be costly and most likely is not your highest financial priority. Luckily, with a little hunting through the racks, you can find practical pieces at any price point in most any store. Stores like H&M are best known for their inexpensive, "disposable fashion" pieces, but every outfit shown in this post was created in the H&M Virtual Dressing Room. These are not pieces that will last for years in your closet, but they are a great alternative when looking to incorporate a new trend.

Blazers are often some of the most expensive pieces in your wardrobe, but a fashion blazer doesn't necessarily need to have the same quality of fabric as your suiting pieces. For the $20 pricetag of the blazer shown to the left, you can afford to take a fashion risk and feel comfortable wearing it in more casual situations where it might get a little dirty.

Although the looks I have are shown with shoes, I do not recommend buying "disposable" shoes. For the price of the shoes shown here, you could get a higher quality pair on sale that will last longer and be significantly more comfortable. A store like H&M is good for fun tops to layer with, basic and casual sweaters, and trendy pieces that you want to experiment with. Remember that no matter your budget, you can look polished, classic and stylish.

Picture
All of the H&M outfits I have put together are looks I would recommend with pieces from any price point. At a higher end store it will most likely be easier to find these types of pieces, but the components of these practically stylish outfits are available everywhere.

The same careful digging that is needed at a store like H&M is also useful at many trendy boutiques. Although the price points are very different, both places focus on the new and fashionable and not always the classic. With a sharp eye you will be able to find great pieces in unexpected places.
